starting the process of making my own bee hive!!! WIppeeee

Steady day today, been making the first part of a bee hive, a national brood box. It is 8 pieces of wood or 4 pieces of wood times two, if that makes sense. Two of each piece. I modified the plans that this guy posted on photobucket. top man.. click here

There are 4 struts that needed a router and that took the longest to do. I had to organised a router and table, but once set up, it did the job very quickly

The larger side pieces are made of plywood and I cut them on a table saw which did the job quite well indeed.

If I had done some close up shots, there is room for improvement but not much and I have tried a frame inside the box and it fits very snug.

I want to make some more boxes next and then move on to a floor and bottom

Once the brood box was made, it was time for dinner, followed by rhubarb and prunes with lots of sugar. Very nice indeed.

The poached egg plant seeds I planted are doing well and this is planted at the base of a plum tree. I want to plant its brothers and sisters round a bee hive.

Weather report - Sunny all day and but very windy this morning in to the afternoon, Wakefield, England

  1. That looks like a great project, and to build your own Bee Hive as well. Did you find your Queen Bee yet? Or have they started making a new queen yet that you can tell. I think this is all so cool.

  2. I really enjoyed making the brood box yesterday. it was great fun. took me a few weeks to buy bit and bobs from ebay at the right price that I could use. Now planning on making more brood boxes and a floor and top, I need some meshing though for the floor and galvanised sheet steel for the top though. If I cant get the sheet steel I will have to settle for roofing felt. Havent found the queen yet, going to look this afternoon for her once I have been to the outlaws for dinner as it is fathers day here. I would fully recommend to any one about bee keeping , definitely getting in to the hobby so far

  3. If I was not so allergic to the bees. I think it would be something I would love to do. The whole thing is so fascinating.
it was Father's Day here as well. My kids did me a favour and left me alone !!!!! Actually my Daughter is in Halifax, Nova Scotia. and my son is in Quebec training for Afghanistan. So both are busy and live way too far from me

  4. It is fun. I would recommend it to any one even with all the problems I have had but to me that is all part of the fun, laughs and learning. Life really.

My old man is like that. he isnt bothered. unless a bottle of scotch turns up that is (his luck wasnt in this year though) otherwise he sees it as a marketing gimmick. Funny your daughter living in Halifax. I talk to a mate on facebook some times called frank charman from Halifax, N S and incidently, there is a Halifax just down the road from me about an hours drive. Good luck to your boy in Quebec. exciting times I would imagine for a young man.

  5. I actually looked up your neck of the woods as it where. You live in a beautiful part of England. I also spent some time reading about Halifax, England. Very beautiful and Historic. I enjoyed reading the history of Wakefield as well. I truly liked that Cathedral. Better some of the infrastructure pics of your city like the brick bridge and so on. I have to laugh about the fact that I posted on my Blog 100 year old houses on my blog to-day, Those would be newbies to you, but here historic.

  6. It is nice round here but I think as I live here I dont always appreciate it. shame on me really. Halifax is great place, am old mill town, it has a nice peace hall which is a large walled area that has open air markets and has shops built in to the walls. great place. As for Wakefield, the cathedral is an awesome sight, been in it a couple of times and very regal would be an understatement. There is also an old stone bridge at the bottom end of town that has a church on the bridge and I think it is one of only 3 or 4 in the country. I have not been in and it is very small, but a great sight to see, It is still a church just not used and several hundred years old. As for houses that are a 100yrs old in your neck of the woods. I suppose history has to start some where, and at 100yrs old, it is still very old and any building is still a great place to reflect an areas past and what has gone before.

  7. I so agree, I looked further into your area of England it is just fantastic all that History. I did live in Holland Park in London for a year but I never really had a chance to see the country side as I would have liked. Still London and Westminster where over whelming all onto themselves. What got me was how Toronto which is on more land has 6 million people (metro) than London with 14 million (metro) I found it all so crowded there but it seemed normal for the Londoners. Still there was so many gardens where ever there was a spot to put one. I really liked that.

  8. I have only been to London once or may be twice. come to think of it and I agree with you. it was very very busy but I suppose Londoners are used to it and I cant say that appealed to me at all. I suppose I am just a country boy at heart. I can live with that . I like a nice slow pace to life. I can see things passing and smile. LOL

  9. I live 1.5 hours drive from down town Toronto, and I like that. You are so right. I love living in a town of 13,000. The speed is nothing like Toronto. However if I want a crazy day it is a short drive. Then I kiss the ground when I get home. The tallest building here is 4 stories. A far cry from the 80 stories in the city!!!!!!

  10. It is nice where I live, I grow in a small town as a kid (35k population) Here in Wakefield there are lots more but it is no where near as busy as Leeds. There are some very tall buildings there. I dont think they make any where near 80 stories though but I could be wrong. Some very large buildings have gone up in the last 10yrs. Although now there is a recession on. all that has stopped now
