My apple tree is bursting into life along with the rest of the garden. The variety is Malus Jonagold which is a variety developed in the US. This is its 4th year and was about 12inches high when first purchased. Last year it did not fruit but the previous year I got 4 apples. They were perfect in size, shape and taste. It is grown in a 15litre paint pot painted green. pruned to shape and has good support. There are lots of bud on it this year.
Is the tree trained against the fence? I don't have any apple trees but I like the idea of stepover trees which I could have around the boundary of my allotment, they're just so expensive though when you buy them trained that way, and I wouldn't know where to start training them myself.
ReplyDeleteJo, this was easy to do, I am not saying I have done it right though, but I am happy with the result. This is in a 15litre paint bucket and is not against a wall.It is free standing against a frame at the back of it, that looks like a hash sign "#" The original plant was I think about a fiver from Wilkinsons and was about 12inch high if that. I let it establish the first year and the second I put the frame at the back. It had two side shoots so I tied them in and I nipped the bud from the lead shoot that was growing up. This made 3 new shoots. 2 to tie in. 1 going left and 1 going right and 1 going straight up. I will post a full picture shortly which will make more sense I hope
