Strawberry heaven, unknown variety and Albion variety

I have high hopes for a good strawberry crop this year. I have had a good strawberry crop for the last 3 years so it can only get better.

The plants above are three years old and a June bearing variety. I dont know the exact one but I think possibly Cambridge vigour or Cambridge favourite. A friend at work gave me some runners and since then I have had hundreds of plants from them. They generally provide strawberries throughout June to early July.

These are new ones and flowering already.... Awesome. The variety is Albion and I purchased 20 bear rooted plants a couple of months back from Ebay at I think £8 inc delivery. These are an ever bearing variety. They should fruit through out the Summer not just June. They have started producing flowers but I keep nipping them out to strengthen the plant. They need to be in the ground sooner rather than later. I also have two other varieties of strawberries.

  1. Strawberries are one of my favourite things that I grow. I had a good crop last year, and I'm hoping for good things again this year. Strawberry plants are supposed to produce well for only about three years. I have started planting up the runners from mine so that I can increase my stock ready to dispose of the original plants after three years. The ever bearing variety sounds good, and you got them for a good price too. I have three varieties which cover most of the season, keep them coming is what I say.

  2. I dont think a person can eat enough strawberries and this year is the first time I have attempted to extend my strawberry fruiting season. I have fingers and toes crossed. I feed them regularly with blood/fish and bone meal so that should stand them in good stead for the season ahead.

  3. I never grew domestic strawberries, I should try it. What I do have is a lot of the wild variety that grow naturally here. They are wonderful to eat. Mind you they are not the big showy ones that are domesticated but the flavour is huge compared to any thing you can buy. I let them grow where ever they want to

  4. If you like strawberries Reg you cannot beat them domesticated ones. I have to smile because one of my other varieties that I have (and have only just got in the last month) are alpine which I think will be the same as your wild ones. I am looking forward to trying them

  5. Too funny!!! What I do is because I love strawberries is to buy them and add my wild ones to the domestic ones if I am making a pie or a sauce. It makes a huge difference to the dish. I have to wonder if those alpine ones are similar to what I grow with out trying here. If so you will understand what I mean about the flavour.

  6. very funny! I am looking forward to trying the alpines, I hope they are similar. The lady I got them from said they were very tasty but small. I will have to post a picture as they are growing in a toilet at the moment. Best container I could find. You will see what I mean later
